The Big Painting, Officially Unveiled

If you weren't able to make the unveiling event, here's a little video of what it was like. The Jackson Historical Society and Museum of White Mountain Art was packed to capacity with spectators. Some folks had to look in at the veil drop from outside the window. It was an incredible event, and I'm so honored by the incredible level of community support that has accompanied this project. The painting was commissioned for permanent display as the centerpiece of the Museum of White Mountains Art's collection. In addition to the Jackson Historical Society, more than 65 private donors have contributed to the project, and will be named on a plaque to be hung beside the painting.

This week I also gave a talk to the local 7th grade art class about the painting. They were great kids, and had excellent questions.

The BIG Unveiling

Behind that drape is my framed and finished 78x135 inch painting in its permanent home at the Jackson Historical Society & Museum of White Mountain Art. Titled “Autumn in the White Mountains," the painting depicts the Northern Presidential Range. This massive artwork, the largest White Mountain painting ever created, will be unveiled at a reception on October 18th at 6:00 pm. Open to the public, with a suggested entrance fee of $5 per person.

This event will coincide with the Annual White Mountain Art Show and Sale. Here are some of the pieces that will be available at the sale. If you'd like to contact the Society about any of these, or see the other works available, CLICK HERE

Darwings and Paintings  of Eagle Cliff by Samuel Lancaster Gerry

From Sketch to Canvas opens Friday, Oct. 12th, 2018 at the Museum of White Mountain Art at Jackson (inside the Jackson Historical Society at 23 Black Mountain Rd., Jackson, N.H.) There will be a reception from 5 to 9 pm.

I'll be giving a brief talk at 7pm about how 19th Century artists worked from drawings, and the role that they have in my painting process.

My new front door mural

I had this idea in the back of my head for a while, and finally went forward with painting a mural on my front door. The picture combines several of my favorite White Mountain scenes stuck together into one sprawling view. Included are Glen Ellis Falls, Emerald Pool, Tuckerman's Ravine, and others.

A Triptych Commission

I had a nice commission through the Quidley & Company Galleries this year, to do a triptych for the mantel pictured above. I thought I would share a little about the process of this project.

After the client had selected me for the commission, they didn't necessarily have a clear idea of what they wanted in the space except to have three paintings that go together installed into the architectural panels above their mantel. So we went over some of my previous works, and they really liked this one...

I proposed that this painting be the basis for the center panel, and to have the two side paintings be invented extensions of the scene. I sketched the idea out  in pencil on a sketchbook page as follows:

As this idea was well received, I went on to a small oil sketch...

Then it was on to the full sized panels, which came to a total of about 6ft. wide. I had to build a little custom apparatus to hold the panels together while I worked...

This shows the setup, and the paintings on the first day of work, when I blocked in the major structures of the pictures.

Then came six months of painting. The challenge for me was to make the three paintings flow together well, but also to have each of them stand on there own as a picture. Here is the finished triptych:

White Mountain Art Show and Sale 2017

It's that time of year again. The Jackson Historical Society will host their 15th Annual White Mountain Art Show and Sale. Additionally the Museum of White Mountain Art in the same building will open it's new exhibition, The Earliest White Mountain Paintings: 1800-1850 Thomas Cole and other Hudson River School Artists. 

The opening reception of both the sale and exhibition will be Friday, October 13th, 2017 from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Jackson Historical Society, 23 Black Mountain Road, Jackson, N.H.

The Show and Sale, includes predominantly 19th Century paintings of the White Mountains, and contemporary White Mountain Art from selected artists, Lauren Sansaricq and myself are included.

Mount Chocorua in Autumn Commission

Art Talk: Sat., June 17th, 2017 Closing of Recovering the American Sublime

 

Local artists Erik Koeppel and Lauren Sansaricq will walk visitors through their current exhibition, Recovering the American Sublime, sharing the stories behind the artwork. 19th Century American landscape painting methods and theory will be discussed, in addition to the artists' contemporary response to that movement, and its relevance today. 

In this exhibition, the paintings of Koeppel and Sansaricq are displayed in conjunction with 19th Century landscape paintings of the White Mountains. The historic paintings are lent from the collections of the Jackson Historical Society and Bethel Historical Society, as a promised gift of Randall H. Bennett.

The Pace Galleries of Art is open to the public on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 am to 1 pm following the Fryeburg Academy academic calendar. Please call the box office at 207-935-9232, or email boxoffice@fryeburgacademy.org to schedule a visit at a different time. 

This will be the last chance to see our Recovering the American Sublime exhibition.
