In this workshop we will attempt to place ourselves in the mindset of the great American Landscape Painters of the 19^th Century. The Hudson River School was a diverse group of artists, with a multitude of styles. In this course we will refer to images from a variety of artist’s work of this period, and explore various drawing and oil painting methods to achieve those ends. Open to all levels.

Join us for a special presentation by award-winning plein air artist Erik Koeppel of Jackson, New Hampshire, as our major summer exhibit, “Art as Antidote: White Mountain Landscapes,” comes to a close. This free event will begin in the Twitchell Education Center, where Koeppel will share his thoughts on the influence and power of art as an antidote to our times using several of his recently completed art works (which will be for sale) as examples. A visit to the "Art as Antidote" exhibit will follow.

Erik Koeppel (b. 1980) was born in Oregon, and spent his childhood moving with his family through many of the most beautiful landscapes of North America—from the Rocky Mountains, to Southern California, to the Appalachian Range. At the age of ten, his family settled in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, where he drew obsessively from nature, and began to develop a love for the expressive potentials of traditional representation. Erik received his formal training from the Rhode Island School of Design followed by the New York Academy of Art, and an annual apprenticeship in Wiscasset, Maine, with his professor and friend, Seaver Leslie. After copying extensively from the Italian Masters, he developed a body of work that has been exhibited and collected internationally, and represented across the United States. Koeppel’s mastery of traditional techniques has led him to become one of very few young contemporary artists whose work is regularly exhibited with historic masters of the 19th and early 20th Centuries. His work has hung beside Thomas Cole, Winslow Homer, Edgar Degas, John Frederick Kensett, and George Inness, and he has had the distinguished honor of entering permanent collections including artists of this caliber. American Artist, PleinAir Magazine, and other respected publications have covered his progress. Koeppel is a member of the esteemed Guild of Boston Artists.

Grand Prize at Plein Air Texas

I'm very honored to report that my paintings won both The Grand Prize and Artist's Choice Awards at Plein Air Texas. Additionally both paintings sold, as well as numerous other pieces created at the event.

It was wonderful to spend time painting with so many talented artists and have access to numerous beautiful private ranches around San Angelo, TX. Everyone was so nice, and I would highly recommend this event to artists and collectors.

This is the description from their website, "The San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts welcomes 34 of the top Plein Air artists in the world to SAN ANGELO, TEXAS!  The fourth annual EnPleinAirTEXAS is one of the top plein air competitions in the country and attracts award-winning artist applicants from coast to coast and from outside the U.S."

Art and Land Conservation Symposium at Colby College, ME

I'm honored to be a panel speaker, at the uncoming Art and Land Conservation Symposium, at Colby College in Waterville, Maine next weekend.

If you'd like to attend the event, it will be August 3rd-4th, 2017

I'll be speaking as part of a panel on Learning from Contemporary Visual Artists from 1:30-3pm on Friday, August 4th.

The other artists on the panel are Evelyn Dunphy, Xio Xiomara, and John Orcutt. The discussion will be moderated by Charles Tracy. Each artist will make a brief presentation introducing their work, and then the discussion will continue as a Q &A.

Mohonk Mountain House, Artists Inspiration Week

I'm happy to announce that I'll be the featured artist at the Mohonk Mountain House's, Artists Inspiration Week, plein air painting event this year. I'll be giving both an indoor and an outdoor painting demonstration, and also will join participating artists for sunrise to sunset plein air painting on and around this beautiful, scenic, and historic property. This event could also be of interest for collectors, as there will be ongoing exhibitions throughout, and you can watch the artist's process as they are painting.

Plein Air Workshop in Louisiana

Shadows-on-the-Teche, New Iberia, Louisiana
March 18th-20th
Saturday through Monday 9:30 to 3:30 pm
Limited to 15 students.
 Cost $475.00

Erik Koeppel is a traditional New England based landscape painter who has become a leader in the revival of the techniques and philosophy of the Hudson River School. Regardless of your level of experience, the goal of this workshop will be to provide you with a thorough introduction to traditional landscape painting.


We will attempt to place ourselves in the mindset of the great Landscape Painters of the past. Students will discover a deeper understanding of how these old masters approached plein-air painting, how they composed the complexity of nature before them, and how they used a layered approach to greater capture qualities of space and form in the landscape. The three days will be intensive learning, including a demo daily, and a lot of paint time practicing techniques learned.

The PleinAir Convention Tucson, AZ

 I was honored to be invited to do a painting demonstration on the main stage of the PleinAir Convention this year in Tucson, AZ. Tucson was a beautiful place to visit and paint, and a nice break from the N.H. mud season.

Hudson River Fellowship and Workshops in the White Mountains 2015

We had another group of 20 some-odd Hudson River Fellows and workshop students visiting Jackson on a grant obtained through the Jackson Historical Society, and the Grand Central Atelier in NYC. Lauren Sansaricq and I have been hosting and instructing this group in the White Mountains for four years now, and it's a pleasure every year to see everyone's beautiful White Mountain paintings, and to have artists all over the Mt. Washington Valley. The Hudson River Fellows had their final exhibition last Friday, and were successful as always, in selling numerous paintings.
