Mohonk Mountain House, Artists Inspiration Week

Sanford Gifford The Shawangunk Mountains, 1864
I'm happy to announce that I'll be the featured artist at the Mohonk Mountain House's, Artists Inspiration Week, plein air painting event this year. I'll be giving both an indoor and an outdoor painting demonstration, and also will join participating artists for sunrise to sunset plein air painting on and around this beautiful, scenic, and historic property. This event could also be of interest for collectors, as there will be ongoing exhibitions throughout, and you can watch the artist's process as they are painting.

There is still room to join the event at the link below:

Description for the show:

Recovering the American Sublime
New Paintings by Erik Koeppel and Lauren Sansaricq in Historical Context

Pace Galleries of Art at Fryeburg Academy
Fryeburg, Maine

Opening Reception - May 6, 2017 from 4 to 7 p.m.

The essential thesis of the 19th century American landscape painter was that by deep reflection upon the beauty of nature, one may ease their weary soul of the troubles inherent to a social being thrust into the industrialized world. Today, as humanity travels further from nature into stark modern interiors and cyberspace, artists Lauren Sansaricq and Erik Koeppel believe that a powerful vision of nature is more needed than ever before. They have thus devoted their minds to reviving an art whose intention is to bring the beauty of nature back to the forefront of human consciousness.

In this exhibition, the paintings of Koeppel and Sansaricq are displayed in juxtaposition with 19th century landscape paintings of the White Mountains. As the couple shares a studio in Jackson, NH, White Mountain subjects are prominent among scenes of New England, and even works from their travels west. The historic paintings are on loan from the collections of the Jackson Historical Society, and Bethel Historical Society, as a promised gift of Randall H. Bennett. Many of the contemporary paintings are available for sale.

The Pace Galleries of Art are open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 am to 1 pm (or by appointment). Call the box office at 207-935-9232 to schedule a visit.

Thank you, and hope to see you at the show!

Two Exhibitions Opening at the Same Time

I believe this is a career first for me. I have two exhibitions opening at almost the exact same time.

Recovering the American Sublime with Lauren Sansaricq, as on the poster below...

...And also the Guild of Boston Artist's Annual Members Juried Exhibition which will open May 6, 3-5pm. If only Star Trek style transporters could be invented I would love to attend a little of both.

Lauren and I will be attending the Fryeburg reception.

Here's the painting that I'm submitting for the Boston Guild show...

Erik Koeppel "Sunset at Olana" 30 x 48 inches. Oil on canvas.
If you can't make one, maybe the other!

I'll be posting more on Recovering the American Sublime and the paintings that will be available soon. If you're a collector and would like to preview the works that will be available for sale, please feel free to email Erik@ErikKoeppel.com

Plein Air Workshop in Louisiana

Erik Koeppel "Sunset from Olana" 30 x 48 in., Oil on canvas

I'll be teaching a Workshop in Louisiana in March.  Prior to the workshop I'll be the judging the Shadows-on-the-Teche Plein Air Competition at the same location. Learn about the competition at this link: http://www.shadowsontheteche.org/plein-air-competition, and the workshop information is below:

Erik Koeppel 3Day Plein Air Oil Painting Workshop:
Shadows-on-the-Teche, New Iberia, Louisiana
March 18th-20th
Saturday through Monday 9:30 to 3:30 pm
Limited to 15 students.
 Cost $475.00

Erik Koeppel is a traditional New England based landscape painter who has become a leader in the revival of the techniques and philosophy of the Hudson River School. Regardless of your level of experience, the goal of this workshop will be to provide you with a thorough introduction to traditional landscape painting.

We will attempt to place ourselves in the mindset of the great Landscape Painters of the past. Students will discover a deeper understanding of how these old masters approached plein-air painting, how they composed the complexity of nature before them, and how they used a layered approach to greater capture qualities of space and form in the landscape. The three days will be intensive learning, including a demo daily, and a lot of paint time practicing techniques learned.

To register for this workshop, please fill out the Registration Form below and submit via e-mail or mail. A deposit of $225 is required to reserve your space. You can mail a check payable to Shadows-on-the-Teche, to The Shadows, 317 East Main Street, New Iberia, LA 70560; or call Pat Kahle at 337.369.6446 to make payment via VISA or Master Card. Balance is due on or before February 18, 2017.

REGISTRATION EMAIL: PKahle@savingplaces.org

See you in Lousiana!
