Painting the Treasure Coast of Florida

Erik Koeppel "Palms at Sunset" 7 x 11 in Oil on Panel
We've just returned from a trip to Florida, where Lauren and I were painting studies of palms, beaches, and marshes all distributed onto a very long, flat landscape filled with lovely unusual birds (at least to a New Englander). Please enjoy the studies, sketches, and drawings from the trip below. These may result in some studio paintings of Florida down the road.

Erik Koeppel "Study of Inland Florida" 7 x 11 in. Oil on Panel

Painting at the House of Refuge

This studio building housed Martin Johnson Heade, and Frank Henry Shapleigh (amongst others) in the 19th Century when they were painting FL.
...and our 19th Century inspiration, here are some historic Florida paintings:

Special thanks to Charlie and Gloria Vogel, for hosting us during our visit, and for sharing your wealth of historic knowledge of the area. Your generosity, is much appreciated.

  1. Absolutely beautiful! I love how small most of studies are.

I adore St. Augustine. Fort DeSoto is another favorite. When I lived in Tampa, I took many excursions to observe birds, architecture, museums, and of course, restaurants. I am sure you have transformed the landscape with your magic brushes!

  3. Wonderful paintings and sketches, Erik. Its nice to see you painting along my home coast. You are right about the birds. They provide an endless source of inspiration for me. Looking forward to seeing your studio paintings someday.
