Share Your Favorite California Painting Spots!

I'm very excited to be attending the PleinAir Painting Convention in Monterey, CA this April, as a faculty member. Last years Convention in Las Vegas was a wonderful time, and one of my first opportunities in recent history to paint out west, which I truly enjoyed.  For info on attending click here

Additionally, I'm planning to tour around California after the Convention, and would love to have your advice on great places to paint surrounding Monterey. We definitely plan to see Yosemite, but are concerned about cold weather in April, and have had enough snow in New Hampshire! If you know places that will be warm and lovely to paint in April in California please let me know, either by commenting here, emailing here, or finding me on facebook! Thank you so much for your help!

Here's a Monterey painting by Thomas Moran that's getting me excited for the trip!

Painting the Treasure Coast of Florida

Erik Koeppel "Palms at Sunset" 7 x 11 in Oil on Panel
We've just returned from a trip to Florida, where Lauren and I were painting studies of palms, beaches, and marshes all distributed onto a very long, flat landscape filled with lovely unusual birds (at least to a New Englander). Please enjoy the studies, sketches, and drawings from the trip below. These may result in some studio paintings of Florida down the road.

Erik Koeppel "Study of Inland Florida" 7 x 11 in. Oil on Panel
Erik Koeppel "Study of the House of Refuge" 8 x 16 in. Oil on panel

Erik Koeppel "Study of the Treasure Coast" 5 x 9 in. Oil on Panel

Erik Koeppel "Study of Palms on the Ft. Pierce Inlet" 4 1/2 x 7 1/2 in. Oil on Panel

Erik Koeppel "Two Studies, Water and Palms" 4 1/2 x 7 1/2 in. Oil on panel
Erik Koeppel "Palm Tree" 6 x4 in Oil on Panel

Sorry for the poor quality sketchbook photos.

This studio building housed Martin Johnson Heade, and Frank Henry Shapleigh (amongst others) in the 19th Century when they were painting FL.

Special thanks to Charlie and Gloria Vogel, for hosting us during our visit, and for sharing your wealth of historic knowledge of the area. Your generosity, is much appreciated.

Jackson, NH Museum in the American Art Review

I was so happy to see the new Museum of White Mountain Art at Jackson as the subject of an article in the American Art Review this month. The article covers their current exhibition On the Road to Jackson, which includes works by Asher B. Durand, Sanford Gifford, Benjamin Champney, Frank H. Shapleigh, and many more first rate artists of the White Mountians. The museum is currently planning an exhibition in conjunction with the Bethel Historical Society, that will include the work of Lauren Sansaricq and I beside the historic masters of the region. (Click here for the current info soon to be updated)

Here's the article:

Many of the locations depicted in the article are views that can still be found today. Here are some paintings and sketches I've done of scenes depicted in the article:

Erik Koeppel "Mt. Washington from Jackson" 10 x 16 Oil on Panel, Private Collection

Erik Koeppel "Crawford Notch" 10 x 18 Oil on Panel

Erik Koeppel "Mt. Chocorua from Chocorua Lake" 14 x 24 in. Private Collection
