Artist's Talk at Phillips Exeter Academy April 25th

Erik Koeppel "Mt. Washington from Square Ledge" 10 x 16 in. Oil on Canvas

I'm very excited to announce an Artist's Talk at Phillips Exeter Academy in their Lamont Gallery (info below). The talk is in conjunction with their current spectacular exhibition, Luminous Terrain: The Art of the White Mountains, which consists of an extensive selection of 19th Century White Mountain paintings from respected private collections. I'll be bringing some of my sketchbooks, painted sketches, and finished paintings, to talk about how these historic artists approached the landscape, and why I feel driven to follow in their footsteps. I'll be around for about 2 hours, and hope to have a lively discussion with lots of Q and A.

Join painter Erik Koeppel, who works in the tradition of the Hudson River and White Mountain Schools, for an artist's talk. Koeppel will present some of his current work, and discuss how he continues the legacy of representational landscape painting.

A George Inness painting of Mt. Washington (at the show!)

Here are some photos I took at the opening event:

Lauren Sansaricq enjoying the show!

Sanford Robinson Gifford painting

Benjamin Champney painting

A shot of one side of the room before it got too crowded (nice Bricher painting behind Lauren)

They even have a little Thomas Cole painting!

You really have to see this show to believe it. There are many rooms packed with first rate works! We were very honored to be invited to the after party at the home of New Hampshire's Governor, Maggie Hassan

Thanks for reading, and I look forward to seeing you at the talk!

  1. Now that my brain has had time to absorb, I think I was most delighted with the unfinished paintings by Inness and Durand, where we could actually see process and development, and the Johnson where we could see his sketch lines through the paint along the mountain ridge. So rare to get that glimpse into the planning and processes!
Anyone with a love for White Mountain School or Hudson River School really should get over there to see this exhibit before it closes next week if it's at all possible!
