Thomas Cole Landscape Art on Display and Open for Viewing Keene, NH, June 22, 2012: Keene State College's Thorne-Sagendorph Art Gallery welcomes Bob Cottrell, curator and specialist in Thomas Cole's art, and Erik Koeppel, New Hampshire landscape artist to discuss the legacy and influence of Thomas Cole's landscape art. The presentation, which will be followed by a question and answer session, is occurring in conjunction with two special landscape art exhibits at the Thorne Gallery - "Wild Land: Thomas Cole and the Birth of American Landscape Painting" and "Illuminating Landscapes and Recent Gifts", which shows Thomas Cole's influence on American landscape art.
When and where: Presentation begins at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 28, 2012. Thorne-Sagendorph Art Gallery Conference Room, Keene State College
Light refreshments will served after the program, and the gallery will be open to visitors from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
This event and exhibit are free and open to the public. Seating is limited.
Background: According to the National Endowment for the Arts, "For over two centuries after their arrival, European Americans viewed the continent's untamed lands as an unknown to be feared and conquered. But in the summer of 1825, a young painter named Thomas Cole (1801-1848) traveled up the Hudson River to spend a month sketching in the Catskill Mountains. What he conceived there not only transformed the way American artists depicted nature and generated the United States' first major art movement but also became a powerful expression of a youthful nation's growing cultural self-confidence." More on Thomas Cole can be found on the National Endowments for the Arts website.
Presenter Bob Cottrell, the Curator of the Henney History Room at the Conway Public Library, specializes in the work of Thomas Cole. Mr. Cottrell will discuss the history and legacy of Cole and how it impacts landscape painting today. His program "reframes" Cole's art within its original contexts and uses modern technologies such as satellite photographs and extensive work in the field to re-learn the true meaning of his work.
Presenter and artist Erik Koeppel, who has work on display at the Thorne Gallery, will speak about the relationship between Thomas Cole's work and his own. The discussion will focus on content, and the difference between painting what you see and painting the poetry of a human experience.
The exhibits, "Wild Land: Thomas Cole and the Birth of American Landscape Painting" and "Illuminating Landscapes and Recent Gifts" will be on display at the Thorne-Sagendorph Art Gallery until July 29, 2012. More detail on these exhibits can be found online.

Full House Hypnotized by Muse at Koeppel Lecture

Yesterday I had a very enjoyable afternoon presenting my lecture, The Epic View: A Revival of the Hudson River School  at the New Hampshire Antiques Co-op. I spoke about the journey that I've taken to arrive at painting in the historic mode, and the philosophy that is behind this kind of painting. Special thanks to the Hackler family for hosting and promoting the lecture, and to everyone who attended. I appreciate your engagement with the talk, and enjoyed the couple hours of questions that followed!

Here are some of my notes for those who missed the event (I think you can read them if you save the file and zoom in)

Clipping from the Telegraph 6.17.12
Lauren Sansaricq sold a painting too!

We had a lovely time at this event, and if you missed it, I hope you'll join me and Bob Cotrell for my next lecture at the Wild Land: Thomas Cole and the Birth of American Landscape Painting where I'll talk about everything that I love about Thomas Cole, and how he inspired historic American painting as well as my own work, and the current revival of traditional landscape painting. The event will be held at the Keene State College, Thorne Sagendorph Gallery on the evening of Thursday, June 28. Please email the gallery for details by clicking here

I'll also have some paintings on view at that exhibition. More to follow.

Here are some of my paintings still on exhibition at the NHAC:

Black Flies Offer Assistance in Outdoor Painting

Removing the flies
I was happily painting away  near the summit of Mt. Stanton, when I saw a gathering of tiny swarming shadows dancing on my palette. Moments later the entire swarm descended into the fresh sticky paint of my sky. Because I work with a very light ground, as I removed the flies one by one with the end of a pointy brush, each one left a little white dot of lifted paint.

the attack

From there it was just a matter of turning the white spots into a lovely swoop of tiny clouds.

Flies turned to clouds
As I continued so did the black flies

So I added more clouds

I tried to get a finished picture with no flies, but one sneaked in while I was shooting it (left)
Thanks for reading, and don't worry Hudson River Fellows, the black flies will be gone by July.

White Mountain Sketchbook and Making Studio Paintings from Drawings

Since moving to Jackson, NH I've been exploring a lot, and in addition to doing a number of outdoor paintings this Spring (see some of them here). I've been hiking around and doing tons of compositional drawings of different areas. The goal of these drawings is not to produce a finished masterpiece, but to gather knowledge of the area, and capture the gesture and certain key details of a given site that would be necessary to create a studio painting using the drawing (combined with general knowledge of the landscape and imagination.) I've found that as I draw outside more and more, I have an increasingly refined sense of what information I need to begin a studio painting. Sometimes very simple drawings are incredibly useful.

Here are some sketchbook pages, and after I'll post a few of the paintings that have come from some of these drawings (though there are more on the way):
